Denis Smith’s Wrexham spell was defined by resilience in chaos. Appointed in October 2001, he took the club down in 2001/02 but responded immediately by winning promotion from the Third Division in 2002/03. His biggest achievement came in the middle of financial crisis: after Wrexham entered administration in December 2004 and were docked 10 points, Smith still led them to the 2005 Football League Trophy, the club’s first national cup final win, beating Southend United 2–0 after extra time in Cardiff. He left in January 2007, but many supporters remember him as the manager who held the club together in one of its darkest periods.
