Wrexham 2–1 Arsenal is still the club’s most iconic result. On 4 January 1992, bottom-of-the-Fourth-Division Wrexham beat reigning First Division champions Arsenal in the FA Cup third round at the Racecourse Ground, in front of a crowd of 13,343. Arsenal led through Alan Smith just before half-time, and the upset looked unlikely. Then, in the 82nd minute, 37-year-old Mickey Thomas smashed in a free-kick, before Steve Watkin scored the winner two minutes later. What made it legendary was the scale of the gap between the teams: Wrexham were struggling at the bottom of the lowest division, Arsenal were champions of England, and yet Wrexham still turned it around. That is why it is regularly remembered as one of the FA Cup’s greatest giant-killings.
