Wrexham’s 1978 promotion was one of the biggest achievements in the club’s history because it took them into the second tier for the first time. Under Arfon Griffiths, they won the Third Division title in 1977/78, clinching both promotion and the championship with a 7–1 win over Rotherham United at the Racecourse on 22 April 1978. The club still describes 1978 as its Football League high point, and that side also reached both the FA Cup and League Cup quarter-finals. More than just going up, it marked the peak of one of Wrexham’s strongest ever teams.
