John Richards became a Wolverhampton Wanderers legend during a prolific career at Molineux from 1969 to 1983, scoring 194 goals in 487 appearances and becoming the club’s record goalscorer until Steve Bull surpassed him; a quick, intelligent and clinical striker, Richards helped Wolves reach the 1972 UEFA Cup final and played a decisive role in their 1974 League Cup triumph, scoring the late winner in a 2–1 victory over Manchester City at Wembley; he also featured as Wolves won promotion back to the First Division in 1976–77 and collected a second League Cup medal in 1980, cementing his status among the club’s greatest forwards.
