Denis Irwin had a brief but important Wolves spell from 2002 to 2004. He arrived after his long success at Manchester United and brought calm, experience and authority to the back line. Irwin helped Wolves win promotion through the 2003 First Division play-offs, a moment he later described as one of the greatest of his career because he had supported the club as a boy. He made 75 league appearances and scored 2 goals for Wolves before retiring after the 2003–04 Premier League season. He is remembered as a classy veteran whose leadership mattered in a major moment for the club.
