Willie Carr became a popular Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder after joining from Coventry City in 1975, bringing creativity, intelligence and technical quality to Molineux; the Scotland international helped Wolves win the Second Division title in 1976–77 and played an important role as they re-established themselves in the top flight, culminating in victory over Nottingham Forest in the 1980 League Cup final; Carr was also famous for devising the innovative “donkey-kick” free-kick, flicking the ball up between his heels for a teammate to volley, a technique later outlawed by the authorities, and he remained with Wolves until 1982.
