Wolves’ 1949 FA Cup win was a landmark moment: it was the club’s first major trophy under Stan Cullis and their third FA Cup overall. In the final at Wembley on 30 April 1949, Wolves beat Leicester City 3–1 in front of 98,920 spectators. Jesse Pye scored twice and Sammy Smyth added the third, while Billy Wright lifted the cup from Princess Elizabeth. The victory was especially important because it helped launch Wolves’ great post-war side, which would go on to become one of England’s strongest teams in the 1950s. For many supporters, it marked the real beginning of Wolves’ golden era.
