Ray Stewart was a hugely important player for West Ham United in the late 1970s and 1980s. A tough, dependable right-back with a powerful shot, he was known for his consistency, commitment, and dead-ball quality, especially from the penalty spot. Signed from Dundee United in 1978, Stewart played a major role in West Ham’s 1980 FA Cup win and their 1981 promotion campaign. He scored regularly for a defender and became one of the club’s most reliable performers over many years. For supporters, Stewart is remembered as a durable, wholehearted servant whose goals and leadership made him a key figure in a successful era.
