Martin Peters became a West Ham United legend after coming through the club’s youth system and making his first-team debut in 1962, developing into an intelligent, elegant midfielder renowned for his perfectly timed runs into the penalty area; alongside Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst, Peters formed part of West Ham’s celebrated trio who helped England win the 1966 World Cup, with Peters scoring in the 4–2 final victory over West Germany; at club level, he helped the Hammers win the 1964 FA Cup and 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup, scoring in the latter final at Wembley, before joining Tottenham Hotspur in 1970 after more than 350 appearances for West Ham.
