Phil Parkes was one of West Ham United’s greatest goalkeepers and a major figure in the club’s successful late-1970s and 1980s sides. Signed from Queens Park Rangers in 1979, he brought calm authority, reliability, and outstanding shot-stopping. Parkes was crucial to West Ham’s 1980 FA Cup triumph and their promotion-winning campaign in 1981, giving the defence real confidence behind players like Billy Bonds and Alvin Martin. He was known for his consistency rather than drama, making difficult saves look routine. For many supporters, Parkes remains one of the finest keepers the club has ever had and a key part of a memorable era.
