Rio Ferdinand was one of the brightest products of West Ham’s Academy of Football. He broke into the first team as a teenager under Harry Redknapp and quickly stood out for composure, pace, and elegance on the ball, unusual qualities for an English centre-back at that time. West Ham’s own history of the 1990s places his emergence in the club’s youth-driven era under Redknapp, while Premier League records note he made his debut at 17 and was the youngest player to score for West Ham in the Premier League. He later won West Ham’s 1998 Hammer of the Year award before leaving for Leeds in 2000.
