Jermain Defoe was one of the brightest strikers to come through West Ham’s Academy of Football. He joined the club as a teenager, made his first-team debut in 2000, and after a prolific loan at Bournemouth forced his way into the senior side. He scored 41 goals in 105 appearances for West Ham, with his breakout campaign coming in 2001–02, when he finished as the club’s top scorer as they ended the season seventh in the Premier League. He stayed after relegation in 2003 but left for Tottenham in February 2004. At West Ham, he is remembered for sharp finishing, pace, and instinctive goalscoring.
