Michael Carrick came through West Ham’s academy and became one of the standout products of the club’s “Academy of Football.” He broke into the first team in the late 1990s and was valued for calm passing, intelligence, and control in midfield rather than flashy moments. Carrick helped West Ham win the 1999 Intertoto Cup and was part of the side that qualified for the UEFA Cup under Harry Redknapp. Although his best-known achievements came later with Tottenham and Manchester United, his West Ham spell was where his style and reputation were formed. He is remembered as one of the club’s classiest modern academy graduates.
