Derek Statham became a West Bromwich Albion legend after coming through the club’s youth system and making his first-team debut in 1976, developing into one of England’s finest left-backs; quick, composed and adventurous going forward, Statham became a key figure in Ron Atkinson’s exciting Albion side, helping the Baggies finish third in the First Division in 1978–79 and reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals; his consistency and attacking ability earned him three England caps, and he remained loyal through more difficult years at The Hawthorns, making around 370 appearances before joining Southampton in 1987, with supporters later voting him among West Bromwich Albion’s greatest-ever players.
