Jeff Astle became a West Bromwich Albion legend after joining from Notts County in 1964, earning the nickname “The King” through his powerful heading and prolific goalscoring; he scored 174 goals in 361 appearances for Albion, but his defining moment came in the 1968 FA Cup final against Everton, when his extra-time strike secured a 1–0 victory at Wembley and made him the first player to score in every round of that season’s competition; Astle also scored in Albion’s 1966 League Cup triumph and represented England at the 1970 World Cup, while his personality, goals and tragic death in 2002 ensured his enduring status as a Hawthorns icon.
