Graham Taylor transformed Watford after becoming manager in 1977, taking the club from the Fourth Division to the First Division in just five years under chairman Elton John; his energetic, direct side achieved three promotions before remarkably finishing First Division runners-up to Liverpool in 1982–83, qualifying for European competition, and then reaching the 1984 FA Cup final; players such as Luther Blissett, John Barnes and Ross Jenkins flourished under Taylor before he left for Aston Villa in 1987; he returned to Watford in 1996 and later delivered consecutive promotions from the third tier to the Premier League, cementing his status as arguably the greatest manager in the club’s history.
