Waterford’s 1980 FAI Cup win was a landmark moment in the club’s history. They beat St Patrick’s Athletic 1–0 in the final at Dalymount Park on 20 April 1980, with defender Brian Gardiner scoring the only goal. It was Waterford’s second FAI Cup and, notably, it remains the last time the club won the competition. Managed by Tommy Jackson, that side is still remembered fondly because it gave Waterford one of their great modern triumphs. In simple terms, the 1980 cup matters so much because it was both a major trophy and the club’s last senior national cup success.
