Ashley Williams (2008–2019) was Wales’ defensive leader of the modern era, winning 86 caps and scoring 2 goals as a commanding centre-back and long-time captain. He captained Wales at Euro 2016, organising a compact, aggressive back line and setting standards for the squad’s rise. His defining moment came in the quarter-final comeback against Belgium, heading the equaliser before Wales surged to a famous 3–1 win en route to the semi-finals.
