Gary Speed (1969–2011) was a key figure for Wales, earning 85 caps between 1990 and 2004 and captaining the side for a large portion of that period. A dynamic, high-energy midfielder, he was valued for leadership, work rate, and consistency, often setting the tempo in a team that frequently relied on experienced professionals. Speed featured through multiple World Cup and European Championship qualifying campaigns, spanning a transitional era for Welsh football, and became one of the nation’s most-capped outfield players of his time. After retiring, he later shaped Wales from the touchline, becoming national team manager in 2010.
