Neville Southall was Wales’ dominant goalkeeper for a generation, winning 92 caps between 1982 and 1997—a national record for many years. A commanding shot-stopper and organiser, he carried club form into internationals across multiple qualification campaigns, even though Wales did not reach a major finals tournament during his era. His status as an elite keeper was underlined by major individual recognition in the mid-1980s. After retiring, he briefly served as Wales caretaker manager in 1999.
