John Charles (1931–2004) was one of Wales’ greatest ever players, appearing as both a centre-forward and a centre-back. He won 38 caps between 1950 and 1965, scoring 15 goals, and captained Wales five times. He was central to the generation that reached the 1958 World Cup, Wales’ landmark run to the quarter-finals. Charles missed the quarter-final defeat to Brazil through injury, a match often cited as a “what if?” moment in Welsh football history.
