Joe Allen was Wales’ midfield metronome of the modern era: a tidy, press-resistant passer who kept structure, recycled possession, and linked play into Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey. He debuted in 2009 and featured in Wales’ breakthrough run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, where his performances earned him a place in the official UEFA Team of the Tournament. He also played at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. Allen first retired from international duty in Feb 2023 (74 caps), later returned, and finished on 77 caps overall.
