Wales’ 2022 World Cup was their first finals appearance since 1958, but it ended in the group stage. In Group B, they opened with a 1–1 draw vs USA: Timothy Weah put the USA ahead before Gareth Bale won and converted a late penalty for Wales’ only goal of the tournament. The campaign swung against them in a 0–2 loss to Iran, where goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was sent off and Wales conceded twice in stoppage time. Needing a win, Wales lost 0–3 to England, finishing bottom with 1 point.
