The United States had one of its best modern World Cup runs in 2002. The U.S. opened by beating Portugal 3–2, then drew 1–1 with co-host South Korea before losing 3–1 to Poland, which was still enough to reach the knockout stage. In the round of 16, the Americans beat rival Mexico 2–0 through goals from Brian McBride and Landon Donovan. Their run ended in the quarterfinals with a narrow 1–0 loss to Germany. Bruce Arena’s team was remembered for discipline, energy, and belief, with Donovan, McBride, Claudio Reyna, Brad Friedel, and John O’Brien among the key figures.
