Eddie Pope was one of the best defenders of his U.S. men’s national team generation. He earned 82 caps and scored 8 goals for the USMNT from 1996 to 2006, standing out for his athleticism, recovery speed, and composure at center back. Pope played in three World Cups—1998, 2002, and 2006—and was a key part of the 2002 team that reached the quarterfinals, one of the best runs in modern U.S. history. He also scored one of the most dramatic goals in American soccer history, the late winner against Cuba in 2004 World Cup qualifying. Pope was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2011.
