Bora Milutinović was the coach who guided the United States men’s national team into the 1994 World Cup on home soil and helped deliver one of the program’s early modern breakthroughs. He managed the U.S. from 1991 to 1995 and led the team to the knockout stage at the 1994 World Cup, where the Americans beat Colombia and then narrowly lost 1–0 to eventual champion Brazil in the round of 16. That run gave the sport credibility in the U.S. at a crucial moment. Milutinović was known as a “miracle worker” for taking multiple countries to World Cups and often making them overperform.
