Balboa was one of the most important defenders in U.S. men’s national team history. He earned 128 caps from 1988 to 2000, played in three World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998), and was twice named U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year. He is especially remembered for playing every minute of the USA’s matches at the 1994 World Cup and for his famous near-miss bicycle kick against Colombia, one of the most iconic moments in U.S. soccer history. A National Soccer Hall of Famer, Balboa helped define the USMNT’s rise in the 1990s.
