The United States reached the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup and came through a brutal Group G with Germany, Portugal, and Ghana. The U.S. beat Ghana 2–1, drew Portugal 2–2 after conceding a stoppage-time equalizer, and then lost 1–0 to Germany, which was still enough to advance as group runner-up on goal difference. In the knockout stage, the U.S. lost 2–1 after extra time to Belgium in a match remembered for Tim Howard’s standout performance in goal. Jürgen Klinsmann coached a resilient team led by Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones, Michael Bradley, and Howard.
