They opened with a 1–1 draw against England, fell behind 2–0 before drawing 2–2 with Slovenia, and then beat Algeria 1–0 through Landon Donovan’s dramatic stoppage-time winner to reach the knockout stage. In the round of 16, the U.S. lost 2–1 to Ghana after extra time despite Donovan equalizing from the penalty spot.
