The USA in 2009 is mainly remembered for an extraordinary Confederations Cup run. Bob Bradley’s side lost their first two group games, including 3–1 to Italy and 3–0 to Brazil, but still reached the semi-finals, where they stunned European champions Spain 2–0, ending Spain’s 35-match unbeaten run. They then took a surprise 2–0 lead against Brazil in the final before losing 3–2. It was still the first major men’s intercontinental final in U.S. history. The year ended less happily with a 5–0 Gold Cup final loss to Mexico, but 2009 remains one of the USMNT’s most memorable years.
