The USA at the 1990 World Cup was more about significance than results. It was the Americans’ first World Cup appearance since 1950, a huge step for a program still trying to establish itself internationally. Coached by Bob Gansler, the U.S. lost all three group matches in Italy: 5–1 to Czechoslovakia, 1–0 to hosts Italy, and 2–1 to Austria, finishing bottom of their group. Even so, U.S. Soccer later described the tournament as groundwork for the modern USMNT, because it gave American players rare top-level experience and helped restart the national team’s World Cup story after a 40-year absence.
