Jan Vertonghen was one of Tottenham’s best modern defenders and a cornerstone of the Pochettino era. Joining from Ajax in 2012, he combined composure on the ball with toughness, reading of the game, and big-game mentality. Mostly a left-sided centre-back (and occasionally at left-back), he formed an outstanding partnership with Toby Alderweireld as Spurs became consistent top-four contenders. Vertonghen played key roles in the 2019 Champions League run to the final and brought leadership without fuss—reliable, intelligent, and rarely rattled. He left in 2020 after 300+ appearances, widely regarded as a Spurs great.
