Gary Mabbutt was a model Spurs captain: calm, courageous, and hugely respected. Joining from Bristol City in 1982, he became a defensive leader (often at centre-back, sometimes midfield) and a mainstay for 16 years. Mabbutt captained Tottenham to major trophies, including the 1984 UEFA Cup and the 1991 FA Cup, and played through serious challenges—most famously diabetes and a broken cheekbone that led to him wearing a protective mask. Not the flashiest player, but intelligent, committed, and relentlessly dependable, he remains one of the club’s defining figures.
