Michael Dawson was Spurs’ heart-and-soul centre-back for over a decade (2005–2016): brave, committed, and a leader in the dressing room. Not the quickest, but he read the game well, threw himself into blocks and headers, and was the kind of defender fans loved because he clearly cared. He captained the side at times and was a key figure as Tottenham pushed into the top four, including the 2009–10 Champions League-qualifying season. Dawson also had a knack for popping up with important goals from set pieces. He left with huge respect—an old-school Spurs stalwart.
