Sol Campbell was a dominant, academy-produced centre-back for Spurs in the 1990s: powerful in the air, quick across the ground, and comfortable stepping into midfield. He became captain young and was the defensive cornerstone of a side that didn’t always give him much protection. Campbell helped Spurs win the 1999 League Cup, scoring in the semi-final and leading a team that ended a trophy drought. His Spurs legacy is complicated by how it ended: in 2001, after running down his contract, he made the explosive move to Arsenal on a free—still one of the most controversial transfers in English football.
