Benoît Assou-Ekotto was Spurs’ laid-back, surprisingly consistent left-back from 2006 to 2013. Signed from Lens, he grew into a first-team regular under Harry Redknapp, offering solid one-v-one defending and a clean left foot going forward without being a constant overlap merchant. He wasn’t flashy and he famously had a very detached, honest attitude in interviews, but on the pitch he was often reliable and underrated. Assou-Ekotto played in the 2008 League Cup–winning squad and was part of the side that broke into the Champions League in 2009–10, leaving as a cult figure.
