Signed from Stockport County in 2008, Williams became the leader of the side that rose from the Championship to the Premier League and established Swansea as one of the most admired footballing teams in Britain. A commanding centre-back known for his organisation, composure and determination, Williams captained Swansea during the club’s most successful modern era. He played a major role in the 2011 promotion-winning side under Brendan Rodgers and later lifted the League Cup in 2013 after Swansea defeated Bradford City 5–0 at Wembley Stadium. Williams also became captain of the Wales national football team and was central to Wales reaching the semi-finals of UEFA Euro 2016. Among Swansea supporters, he remains a symbol of leadership and the club’s rise to national prominence.
