John Toshack transformed Swansea City after becoming player-manager in 1978, taking the club on an extraordinary journey from the Fourth Division to the First Division in just four seasons; the former Liverpool striker combined his own goalscoring experience with talented players such as Alan Curtis, Robbie James and Leighton James, winning three promotions and taking Swansea into the top flight for the first time; their 1981–82 First Division debut began with a famous 5–1 victory over Leeds United, and the Swans remarkably challenged for the league title before finishing sixth; although the team later declined rapidly, Toshack’s spectacular rise through the divisions remains one of the greatest managerial achievements in Swansea City history.
