Roker Park was the intimate, boxy old home of Sunderland AFC from 1898 to 1997—99 years of tightly packed terraces, fierce noise, and iconic ends like the Roker End and Fulwell End. Opened on 10 September 1898, it evolved into a classic English ground, with major work by Archibald Leitch (notably the Main Stand and Clock Stand). Its final capacity was about 22,500, but it once drew a record 75,118. The club moved to the Stadium of Light, and the site was later redeveloped for housing.
