Peter Reid transformed Sunderland A.F.C. during one of the most memorable periods in the club’s modern history. Appointed manager in 1995, Reid guided the Black Cats to promotion to the Premier League in his first full season before later winning the First Division title in 1998–99 with a then-record 105 points. Built around stars such as Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn, his side then achieved consecutive seventh-place Premier League finishes in 1999–2000 and 2000–01. Reid’s passionate touchline personality, attacking football and connection with the supporters made him a hugely popular figure, and his achievements established Sunderland as a formidable top-flight side.
