Martin O’Neill arrived at Sunderland AFC on 3 December 2011, replacing Steve Bruce with the club 16th in the Premier League. He sparked an immediate surge—organised, hard-running, counter-attacking—and steered the Black Cats clear, finishing 13th in 2011–12 (and winning Premier League Manager of the Month for December). Tactically he preferred a compact 4-4-1-1/4-4-2, direct breaks and set-piece discipline rather than long spells of possession. Momentum faded in 2012–13, and Sunderland sacked him on 30 March 2013.
