Charlie Hurley (“King Charlie”) is one of **Sunderland AFC’s great centre-halves: a towering organiser, dominant in the air, and a natural leader. Signed from Millwall in 1957, he spent 12 seasons on Wearside, making 400+ appearances and captaining the side to promotion in 1963–64—a status so strong he was voted the club’s Player of the Century in 1979. He also earned 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland national football team, bringing that authority to international level.
