Charlie Hurley is regarded as one of the greatest players in Sunderland A.F.C. history and was famously voted the club’s Player of the Century by supporters. Joining from Millwall in 1957, the commanding Irish centre-half made over 400 appearances for the Black Cats and became renowned for his strength, leadership and exceptional ability in the air. Nicknamed “The King”, Hurley helped Sunderland win promotion to the First Division in 1963–64 and became a huge favourite at Roker Park, where supporters regularly chanted his name. His commanding performances, loyalty and connection with the fans secured his status as one of Sunderland’s most iconic figures.
