Dave Halliday was Sunderland’s pre-war goal machine: signed in 1925 for around £4,000 to replace Charlie Buchan, he immediately rattled in goals at a ridiculous rate. In five seasons he scored 156 league goals in 166 league games (165 in 175 in all competitions), including 43 in 1928–29 to finish as England’s top-flight top scorer. He hit 35+ league goals in four straight seasons and reached 100 top-division goals in just 101 games, a famous benchmark. He left for Arsenal in late 1929.
