Bobby Gurney is Sunderland AFC’s all-time record scorer: a local Silksworth striker who became the club’s pre-war goal machine. Signed from **Bishop Auckland in 1925, he debuted in 1926 and piled up 228 league goals (348 league games), with a reputation for ruthless finishing, hat-tricks and big-match nerve. He won the First Division title in 1935–36 and scored in the 1937 FA Cup Final at **Wembley Stadium. He also earned one cap for the **England national football team.
