Signed in 2007 from Heart of Midlothian for £9m—then a British record for a goalkeeper—he arrived as a long-term No.1. Under Roy Keane, he showed elite shot-stopping and presence, but his spell was repeatedly derailed by knee problems and a broken arm. Long absences saw him overtaken by Simon Mignolet, and he never fully regained momentum. The move symbolised Sunderland ambition, but injuries defined his Wearside story. He made 95 appearances before leaving in 2012, later reviving his career at Celtic.
