Sunderland’s EFL Trophy triumph came at Wembley Stadium on 14 March 2021 (then branded the Papa John’s Trophy). The competition is a knockout for League One/Two clubs plus invited academy sides. Played behind closed doors (official attendance 0) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they beat Tranmere Rovers 1–0—one day after the delayed 2020 final—to end a long under-the-arch drought. Lynden Gooch scored on 57 minutes after a defence-splitting pass from Aiden McGeady, and keeper Lee Burge helped see it out under head coach Lee Johnson.
