Gary Bennett is a true Sunderland AFC stalwart: a tough, athletic centre-back who joined in 1984 and stayed until 1995, racking up 369 league games (over 440 in all competitions) and chipping in with goals despite being a defender. He was a key leader through big moments—Third Division title winners in 1987–88, plus runs to the League Cup final (1985) and FA Cup final (1992). Off the pitch, he became a prominent anti-racism campaigner with Show Racism the Red Card.
