In the 1973 FA Cup final, Sunderland AFC—then a Second Division side—stunned holders Leeds United 1–0 at Wembley Stadium on 5 May 1973, watched by 100,000. Ian Porterfield scored on 31 minutes, and Leeds responded with wave after wave of pressure. The defining moment was keeper Jimmy Montgomery’s famous double save—denying Trevor Cherry, then blocking Peter Lorimer’s rebound. Manager Bob Stokoe’s full-time sprint became the lasting image of a giant-killing classic.
