In the 1936–37 FA Cup, Sunderland AFC—then a First Division force—suffered a classic shock. Drawn with Port Vale in the third round (top-flight clubs entered at this stage), Sunderland were held 2–2 at Roker Park, then beaten 2–0 in the replay at Vale Park, crashing out before any momentum built. The upset was especially stark because Sunderland’s league form was superb: they went on to win the 1935–36 Football League title. The cup itself ended with Arsenal beating Sheffield United 1–0 at Wembley Stadium, with Ted Drake scoring the only goal.
